Hazrat Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her), the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Khadijah (RA), stands as the ultimate symbol of moral excellence and spiritual purity in Islam. Her life serves as a timeless blueprint for women worldwide, reflecting the profound character and teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) beautifully highlighted her high status by stating:
"Whoever hurts Fatima, hurts me, and whoever hurts me, hurts Allah."
Early Life and Spiritual Upbringing
Raised in the household of prophetic revelation, Hazrat Fatima Zahra (SA) spent her early years entirely immersed in the teachings of Islam. Faith, piety, and wisdom were deeply woven into her character from childhood.
Her life can be viewed through three distinct phases of dedication:
- Pre-independence years: Spent five years under the direct care of her mother and father.
- Prophetic guidance: Spent four years being nurtured solely under the shadow of the Prophet (PBUH).
- Marital life: Spent nine years with her husband, Hazrat Ali (AS), dedicated to family and community service.
Throughout her life, her heart remained free from the ignorance of the pre-Islamic era, focusing entirely on the worship of Allah and devotion to Islam.
The Role Model for Domestic Life and Marriage
After marrying Hazrat Ali Murtaza (AS), Hazrat Fatima (SA) established a household built on mutual respect and shared responsibilities. Their marriage set a perfect example of how couples should navigate the jihad of life together.
Division of Work
Following Islamic wisdom, the couple divided their daily duties clearly:
- Hazrat Ali (AS): Managed all outdoor labor and financial sustenance for the family.
- Hazrat Fatima (AS): Handled all indoor household chores with ultimate devotion.
The Story Behind Tasbih of Fatima Zahra
Despite doing heavy domestic chores—including sweeping, cooking, spinning, and grinding grain—she never demanded a servant.
When she eventually requested a helper from her father, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) gifted her something greater than material assistance—a spiritual remedy known today as the Tasbih of Fatima Zahra:
- Allahu Akbar (34 times)
- Alhamdulillah (33 times)
- Subhan Allah (33 times)
She accepted this spiritual gift with profound joy, prioritizing divine remembrance over worldly comfort. Later, the Prophet (PBUH) granted her a helper named Fizza, whom Hazrat Fatima treated not as a servant, but as a dear friend, sharing the household chores equally day by day.
Her Perspective on Modesty and Hijab
Hazrat Fatima Zahra (SA) placed immense emphasis on the concept of the veil (Hijab) for women, both through her actions and sayings. Even though her house was adjacent to the main mosque, she maintained strict modesty. Instead of attending public gatherings, she remained informed about the Prophet’s sermons through her young son, Imam Hasan (AS), who would recount them to his mother upon returning home.
When the Holy Prophet (PBUH) once asked his companions, "What is the best thing for a woman?", Hazrat Fatima sent the definitive answer:
"The best thing for a woman is that she does not look at any strange man, nor does any strange man look at her."
Upon hearing this wise response, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) proudly remarked: "Fatima is a part of me."
Unmatched Love and Respect from the Prophet (PBUH)
The Prophet’s love for Hazrat Fatima (SA) was extraordinary and unique:
- Before Journeys: She was always the last person the Prophet (PBUH) visited before leaving for battle.
- Upon Return: She was the very first person he went to see when returning to Medina.
- Deep Reverence: Whenever she entered the room, the Prophet (PBUH) would stand up in respect, kiss her forehead, and offer her his own seat.
Islamic scholars universally acknowledge her supreme status through numerous authentic Hadiths, confirming her as:
- The Leader of all women in Paradise (Sayyidatun Nisa al-Alamin).
- The Leader of all true believers.
- The individual whose pleasure aligns with Allah's pleasure, and whose anger invokes Allah’s displeasure.
Trials, Hardships, and Martyrdom
Following the passing of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), the atmosphere in Medina changed drastically, and Hazrat Fatima (SA) faced severe emotional and physical trials. The political shifts resulted in the denial of her rightful claim to the land of Fadak, a property bequeathed to her by her father. The rejection of her legitimate legal right by the authorities caused her deep sorrow that remained until her final breath.
More devastatingly, political tensions led to a tragic assault on her home. The physical trauma suffered during these events severely impacted her health, ultimately leading to her untimely martyrdom. Her immense grief is encapsulated in her famous poetic lament:
"Such calamities have fallen upon me that if they had fallen upon days, they would have turned into dark nights."
In accordance with her final wishes and narrations found in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, she expressed her grievances regarding the injustices faced and requested a private burial. She remains an eternal symbol of resilience, truth, and unwavering faith.
